Everyone needs rest and relaxation.
People need to rest.
When you engage in efforts to build a better world–or just a better neighbourhood–it can be exhausting. Throw in a pandemic, job tumult and more, it can pull away your energy and excitement, not only for the work together but in the efforts you take on with your community.
So we’re inviting you to listen to some podcasts and do some reading over the summer. Audiobooks are wonderful. Podcasts are wonderful. If you’re doing a road trip, take a moment to take time for rest.
Rest allows people to let go: and also to create the space for new passions, ideas and plans to “let come.” Rest and renewal, and taking time for it, allows for organizers, leaders and organizers to engage with “presencing,” to be able to take on the next task, but also to be open to reacting to what we hear from our communities, neighbourhoods and organizations.
May it inspire you for the fall.
Suggested Content:
- As we continue our work as a broad-based organization team, we are asking for members of the Strategy Team, member institutions and the core teams that make up the Calgary Alliance to review the shared Culture Document (three pages) that’s available on our campaign page, which is here. It fits with our ongoing work on reconciliation and our efforts with the World Café that took place this month.
- One of my favourites is the new season of Listen, Organize Act podcast, as well as the classic Rules for Radicals book by Saul Alinksy. Both are included on the page, with links to where to access them. This is also available on our campaign page.
- Utopia for Realists is another great book. Do you think we cannot afford universal basic income or a shorter work week? This book will challenge you to examine the world as it is and inspire policies and ideas for the next steps toward a common good for all.
Part and parcel of this effort are to renew and re-energize passions for organizing and building your teams as we approach the fall. Thank you for taking the time to read this quick bulletin and for being part of this shared mission of ours.
